ATLANTA (AP) -Nicklas Lidstrom's 10th All-Star appearance brought out a smile that belied what has become routine for the topflight Detroit defenseman. Joe Thornton is back for his fifth, and seemed miffed that anyone would pass up the chance to show off their talent in the ultimate hockey exhibition. Sidney Crosby and Lidstrom's Red Wings teammate Henrik Zetterberg were in line to start Sunday night in the NHL All-Star game, but injuries made that impossible. The elected goalies: New Jersey's Martin Brodeur for the Eastern Conference, and Vancouver's Roberto Luongo out West turned down invitations due to family commitments. A four-day break in the hectic 82-game schedule is a luxury that comes about just once a season, and the chance to spend it away from the rink is sometimes too much to give up.
Obituary: George Habash
For decades George Habash was one of the most important Palestinian militant leaders. In 1967 he founded the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) - at one time the most notorious of the many Palestinian factions. The group and its leader pioneered the tactic of hijacking aeroplanes, to try to achieve political objectives. For many years the PFLP was very influential within the PLO, second only to Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement. George Habash was born into a Christian family in Lydda (present-day Lod) in Palestine around 1926. His family fled their home in 1948, when Israel was founded. Soon afterwards George Habash enrolled at the American University of Beirut where he studied medicine. 'Revolutionary violence' However, from an early age politics was Dr Habash's passion.
Babe Ruth's nephew convicted of defrauding IRS
During a three-week trial, prosecutors said the pair operated their scheme from January 2003 to December 2004 while they were inmates at the Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution. Ruth had been serving a 33-month sentence for mail fraud. Pilkey was serving 10 years for a drug conviction. They were charged with filling 178 false individual income tax returns that contained fraudulent claims for refunds. Prosecutors said the pair used their own names and names of others, including fellow inmates and former inmates, to file false returns for tax years 2000 through 2003. They mailed the returns to third parties, who then mailed them to various IRS service centers. Sentencing is scheduled for May 2. .
